Chapter 59

“I wonder what Carrie Mae would say about that?” I asked with concern.

“She’ll get more rent and her building would get an update,” Alex pointed out. “Better yet, Lily; she might consider selling you the building.”

“Alex, do you think Lily is made of money or something?” Lynn sarcastically asked.

“Perhaps in time she would sell it, and if I do well with my business, I could actually buy it,” I fantasized.

“Well at least you’re thinking positively,” Lynn responded. “You just bought all her inventory, and I know it takes a while to establish a business.” Alex could tell I had not told Lynn about the money Rosie had left for me.

“Look, whatever scenario you come up with, I’m certain Carrie Mae will work with you,” Alex said with vigor. “She has everything to gain from your interest in the place.”

“You’re probably right there, Alex.” Lynn nodded.

The rest of the evening was full of silly notions, plans, and ideas, and lots of laughs. I was so lucky to have their support with whatever I decided. Lynn didn’t bring up Carl’s name, which was a good thing. She was working through a difficult situation and I wanted to support her. I did have to wonder where Carl really was tonight.

I got home around midnight. The neighborhood was sound asleep. For a moment, I wondered about Bertie and told myself to check on her in the morning.

Sleep came easily because in one day, I had secured a place to do business and even reside, if I wanted. Lily Girl’s Quilts and Antiques had a nice ring to it and made me smile.

The next morning I felt the effect of drinking a large fishbowl of beer and headed for some aspirin. My phone was ringing, and it was Sarah.

“I’m sorry I’m calling so early,” she said apologetically. “I was wondering if you minded if I came to see you this weekend. Do you have plans?”

I was half asleep, trying to digest what she was asking. “Yes. I mean, no,” I stumbled. “Sure, does your mother know?”

“I just told her I was going. I can only stay a couple of days because of this part-time job, but it’s worth it to get away.”

“You’re flying, I presume?”

“Yes. I’ll come in on Friday night. I could stay with Lynn, but she and Carl are having issues, so I’d rather stay with you.”

“That’s fine, but I’ll have to go out to the wine country to take care of some things regarding my antiques,” I warned.

“Oh, the wine country! How cool!”

“Don’t get too excited. I’ll be putting you to work.”

“Great! No problem! I’ll text you my flight information.”

When we hung up, I really had a headache. I didn’t want to get in the middle of Sarah and Loretta. Maybe Lynn would have some ideas.

I got my coffee and went onto the porch to check the weather. I was thinking about how to approach Carrie Mae about the apartment upstairs. Surely she would know who could do the various repairs that would be needed.
